The Certified Professional Coder (CIC®) exam, a rigorous evaluation of medical coding proficiency, includes:

  • Question Format: Consists of 100 multiple-choice questions designed to test knowledge across 17 areas.

  • Testing Options: Administered either online or in-person, offering flexibility for candidates. Online exams can be taken from the comfort of your own private space or through a licensed instructor or local chapter.

Approved Code Books

For the CIC® exam, the following code books are required:

  • AMA’s CPT® Professional Edition (current year)
  • ICD-10-CM (current year) from any publisher
  • HCPCS Level II (current year) from any publisher

It’s crucial to utilize the code books from the current calendar year, as code sets are updated annually. Any officially published updates (errata) for these code books may also be used during the exam.
